Fenerbahce’s Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood have both been sanctioned by UEFA following a mass confrontation after August’s Champions League qualifier against Lyon.Fenerbahce midfielder Guendouzi, 27, has been fined €50,000 (£42,960; $58,060) and banned for four games, the second two of which are suspended for a probationary period of one year, for “insulting others, provoking spectators and violating the basic rules of decent conduct”.Team-mate Greenwood, 24, has been fined €30,000 (£25,780; $34,840) and given a suspended one-game ban for “violating the basic rules of decent conduct”.Lyon goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira has been handed a five-match ban, two of which are suspended for one year, for “serious assault”.Both clubs have also been fined for various crowd behaviours, including the lighting of pyrotechnics, and were both given €50,000 fines for “violating the general and basic rules of conduct”.Fenerbahce were 2-1 winners over Lyon at Groupama Stadium, securing a 3-2 aggregate victory and a place in the Champions League league phase at their opponent’s expense.Guendouzi, who played for Lyon’s rivals Marseille between 2022 and 2024, was seen provoking the Lyon fans at full time with a series of exuberant celebrations. He was then confronted as he left the field, sparking a mass brawl involving players and staff from both teams.“If we can’t celebrate the way we want afterwards, I find that disappointing,” Guendouzi told reporters after the game, according to the BBC.“When you have 60,000 people insulting your family, your mother, your children, even before the game, and no one on the referee’s side tells the crowd to be quiet.“I know that in France, when this kind of thing happens, there comes a point where they’ll talk to the fans to stop and maybe stop the match.”
