Malvern Prep opened its season with an impressive defensive performance Friday, shutting out La Salle College 21-0 in a battle of Philadelphia powers in Ocean City New Jersey.The Friars took control early behind running back Julius Riddick, who scored on a 1-yard run with 4:19 remaining in the first quarter. Riddick struck again late in the second quarter after Will Simmons intercepted La Salle quarterback Luke Gordon and returned the ball inside the Explorers' 10-yard line. Riddick scored from 3 yards out to give Malvern Prep a 14-0 halftime lead.La Salle had opportunities to cut into the deficit but couldn't finish drives against a Malvern Prep defense that consistently pressured Gordon. George Parkinson IV was particularly disruptive, contributing multiple sacks, including a strip sack on La Salle's opening possession.The Explorers' best first-half scoring opportunity ended when Jackson Laufer missed a 24-yard field goal. Gordon was intercepted twice, with Jack Schuster making a diving interception at the Malvern Prep 7-yard line in the third quarter to end another La Salle possession.Schuster then put the game away in the fourth quarter. He caught a wide receiver screen from Brayden Fallon, cut inside a defender and raced 42 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 21-0.Malvern Prep's defense did the rest, stopping La Salle on downs with less than three minutes remaining before the Friars went into victory formation.The loss drops La Salle to 0-2, while Malvern Prep opens its season 1-0.
