Kolkata: The West Bengal Police arrested Trinamool Congress leader Somnath Dey, former chairman of the Panihati municipality in North 24 Parganas, from Bengaluru in connection with the alleged hurried cremation of the young doctor who was found raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College in August 2024.The police arrested Dey on Thursday, and when he was brought to the Khardah police station on Friday, people gathered there hurled eggs at him. Earlier, he was produced in a Bengaluru court and then brought to Kolkata on a transit remand.Dey is the third Trinamool Congress leader to be arrested in this case, after chief minister Suvendu Adhikari ordered a fresh probe on the cremation issue. The state police also arrested former assembly chief whip Nirmal Ghosh from Odisha and former Trinamool councillor Sanjeev Mukherjee from Chinar Park in Kolkata in mid-August.The Barrackpore Police Commissionerate registered an FIR in the case based on a complaint by the victim's father. He alleged that the accused were present at his house where his daughter's body was first brought and exerted pressure on the family to take it to the crematorium despite their unwillingness to do so.

The father alleged pressure was exerted on the family for the cremation.
