The modernisation of 105 village ponds across the State at a cost of ₹50 crore as per the directions of Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Environment & Forests K. Pawan Kalyan under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY)not only helped in increasing the groundwater levels but also provided a serene atmosphere around them as walking tracks were laid, open-air gymasiums set up and children’s parks developed as part of a comprehensive plan of action to make the most of these water bodies.An official release said the PMKSY gave a new momentum to the much-needed rejuvenation of freshwater ponds and lakes in the State in tune with the government’s commitment to shape them into efficient irrigation water resources and systems that protect ecological balance.While a sum of ₹50 crore had been sanctioned for the scheme, 26 ponds were already beautified in Anantapur, Palnadu, Sri Sathya Sai, Chittoor, Kurnool, Nellore, Kakinada, and Guntur districts, and the remaining works were in various stages.As part of the scheme, works like strengthening the pond bunds, construction of entry gates and installation of solar lights were undertaken. The Deputy Chief Minister told the officials to pay special attention to the quality of works and complete them by the end of September.He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for continuously providing assistance and cooperation for development of the State through Centrally Sponsored Schemes, and Chief Minister N.
