Many cat owners believe their pet chooses to sleep on their bed simply for comfort or because they're so tired, but according to experts there's a sweet alternative reason15:56, 04 Sep 2026Ever wondered why your beloved cat sleeps on your bed? You'd be forgiven for thinking it's simply out of feline tiredness or comfort - but according to experts, that isn't the case. One owner took to TikTok to explain that cats are predators - but also prey. "In the wild, sleeping is the most dangerous moment of any animal's life," they revealed in a video. "So, when your cat picks your bed every single night, that's not just a habit - it's a decision." The owner of 'Oreo' and 'Pumpkin Spice' went on to point out that cats only sleep deeply beside someone they completely trust."By choosing your bed, your cat is saying, 'You are my safe place'," they continued. However, it goes "further", they said."While you sleep, your cat stays partially alert, listening to sounds and watching the door," the owner added. "They're not just sleeping next to you, they're watching over you - every single night."They closed by advising if your cat sleeps touching your legs or chest, or against your body, that is the "highest level of trust" they can portray."It means they don't see you as an owner anymore," they said. "They see you as family."Content cannot be displayed without consentCat food brand, Sheba, support the theory and explained online: "When a cat sleeps next to you in bed, it’s usually because they love you and are showing their affection."Sleeping together is a way for cats to bond and spend quality time with their owners. However, your cat could be marking their territory, staying safe from danger, or simply enjoying the comfort and warmth of you and your bed."Adding to the "safety" aspect of kitty slumber, Sheba continued: "Your cat may also sleep on your bed because they need a sense of security as part of their natural instincts. Cats feel most vulnerable when they are sleeping at night as their guard is down, which increases the chance of being attacked by a predator."While there is no predator in your home, by sleeping in your bed, your cat trusts that you will protect them. Cats also enjoy sleeping at a height as it gives them a vantage point and makes them feel safer than sleeping on the floor and therefore allows them to relax and rest."Responding to the cat owner's clip, one TikTok user shared: "My two cats always sleep on my bed, always making sure they are snuggled with my legs or chest."Article continues belowA second person commented: "Either on the pillows next to me or under the blankets curled around my feet."And a third cat lover added: "My ragdoll Stella sleeps with me 24/7. She owns half of my bed and sleeps under the blanket."
