The beat. Nonfarm payrolls rose by 162,000 in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday, roughly three times the 53,000-to-56,000 gain forecasters expected, and the same release revised July from a reported loss of 23,000 jobs to a gain of 21,000.
