The State government has placed under suspension three officials, including the in-charge headmaster, following the partial collapse of the roof of a school building in Bagalkot district.C.B. Helavar, the headmaster, S.M. Revadi, and S.M. Sanganal, assistant executive engineer and junior engineer, respectively, at the Panchayat Raj Engineering Department, have been suspended pending further inquiry. They have been charged with negligence and dereliction of duty.As many as eight children had suffered minor injuries in the incident, which occurred at the government school in Mugaloli Tanda area of Bagalkot taluk on Wednesday (September 2). Lokayukta officials registered a suo motu case after a spot inspection. School teachers, however, told reporters in Bagalkot on Thursday (September 3) that the damage was limited as the children were made to sit far away from the vulnerable portions of the roof.The headmaster had not informed the Education Department that the roof needed urgent repair. The engineers have been accused of not inspecting or providing a proper certificate on the fitness of the school building.The zilla panchayat conducted a survey of all schools in the district before the beginning of the academic year, following which the engineers inspected all schools. They said that 628 school buildings were unfit. However, the name of the Mugaloli Tanda school did not figure in the list, said a letter from the zilla panchayat.
