Mikel Arteta says he has no regrets over Arsenal selling three forwards and only signing one in the summer transfer window, despite the external perception that his squad has been left light in attack.Arsenal sold Leandro Trossard to Besiktas for €20million (£17.1m, $22.9m), Gabriel Jesus to Barcelona for around €10m (£8.5m; $11.6m) and Gabriel Martinelli to Al Hilal for €70m (£60m; $81.4m).Their only incoming forward signing was Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for €40m ($45.8m, £34m), with the Greek international starting in the Community Shield and the opening two Premier League games of the season.The decision to let these two left wingers and a centre-forward depart leaves Arsenal’s main options in each position as Tzolis and Eberechi Eze on the left with Kai Havertz, Viktor Gyokeres and Mikel Merino through the middle.Asked if he has any regrets, Arteta said: “No. The selling of players can come from different aspects as well. It’s not always the same one. That’s part of the responsibility we have at the football club.“I understand the point of view, but we have to understand the amount of minutes those players played and the ones that were injured, especially in the first six months. Then the data shows something completely different, but it is what it is. This is what we have and we already have some very good players.”Of the three forwards who did leave, Arteta’s injury argument is most applicable to Jesus. The Brazil forward made his first appearance of the 2025-26 season on December 10, 2025, after an 11-month absence with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.Trossard and Martinelli missed two league games each through injury in the first half of last season. Trossard played 1,049 league minutes in this period, whereas Martinelli played 535 minutes.In tribute to Martinelli, who spent seven years at Arsenal and was a shining light alongside Bukayo Saka when breaking through as a teenager, Arteta added: “With Gabi, (I have gratitude. It’s been a pleasure to work with him and be part of his journey.“The Gabi I met and the one that just left had a huge transformation both personally and professionally. The impact he had for the club, his ambition, his love for the game and the way he has helped us to grow and achieve our goals, he has been a critical player. The outcome after can be different to what you expect, but the intention was certainly there, which is what I value the most.”Arsenal will meet one of their transfer targets this weekend in Chelsea’s Morgan Rogers, and Arteta has a few minor fitness concerns to consider ahead of the game.Bruno Guimaraes did not train during the week, but the Arsenal manager said: “He had a knock against Villa and he’s been assessed. He will probably be okay for training tomorrow.”On Cristhian Mosquera and Jurrien Timber, he added: “It was more precaution than anything else (to bring Mosquera off against Aston Villa). We will have to see how he feels in the session tomorrow.“(Jurrien) is in really good condition. He’s been on the pitch for a few weeks and training with us, so he’s in a good place. We will decide tomorrow after training (if he is available).William Saliba is still a longer-term absentee, but has been named in Arsenal’s Champions League squad. On the France international, Arteta said: “We don’t really know the number of weeks that he’s going to be out because it’s about a healing process that is a bit different. We have to respect certain timings.“The progression has been really positive in the last few weeks but we have to wait and see how that bone reacts when we start to put load into it.”
