Demanding the release of water into the Mettur Right Bank Canal for irrigation, farmers blocked Bhavani–Mettur road at the Three Roads junction on Friday.The protest was organised by the Mettur Right Bank Canal Irrigators’ Association and farmers from the area. The protesters staged a demonstration before resorting to the road blockade.Following the blockade, officials from the Water Resources and Revenue Departments, along with the police, held talks with the protesters. The officials assured the farmers that all arrangements would be made to release water into the Mettur Right Bank Canal for irrigation by September 8.The farmers, however, said they would give the authorities time until September 10. They warned that they would resume the road blockade if water was not released by then. Following the assurance, the farmers withdrew their protest and dispersed peacefully.
