The Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme will be expanded to cover 50 more schools in the Erode Corporation limits, benefiting 7,894 additional students.The breakfast scheme was introduced for students of Classes I to V in government and government-aided primary schools with the objectives of addressing malnutrition and preventing dropouts. The government has now extended it to students of Classes VI to VIII under the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme. The expanded scheme will be implemented from September 17.Breakfast is currently being provided to 9,588 students in 74 primary schools under the Corporation. Of the 50 schools covered under the expansion, 25 are middle schools among the existing 74 schools, while 25 are additional schools. With this, the scheme will cover 99 schools and benefit a total of 17,452 students.Corporation Commissioner Arpit Jain held a meeting with the headmasters of the schools concerned on Thursday to discuss arrangements for implementing the expanded scheme. Requirements such as dining spaces and drinking water facilities were discussed at the meeting.The Corporation Engineering Division is taking steps to erect temporary sheds at schools where adequate facilities are not available. Mr. Jain directed officials to expedite the preparatory works and ensure that the required basic facilities were put in place before the scheme is implemented.
