With spring in the air, the Independent on Saturday approached The Gardener's Tanya Visser to find out what makes a perfect spring garden. In the process I was invited to take in Visser’s magnificent garden at her home in Assagay, and along the way she shared many of her insights.
The first thing to note is that Visser is not a conventional gardener. She believes it is your garden and you make the rules.
Her love of gardening comes from growing up in the small South Coast town of Umzinto. “My mom worked for the standard bank all her life. My father was a builder and started at Illovo Sugar and died at Illovo Sugar. It was a very traditional family. And we’d have these big family functions and we all left with plants. My dad grew roses and veggies, my mom loved orchids and anthuriums. So there’s a part of everybody in this garden because for me gardening is about legacy. It's about remembrance. And that is one of the biggest kicks I get out of it.
