Atiku Abubakar, Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has capitalised on the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria’s (IPMAN) call for government intervention in domestic refining, saying the position has exposed what he described as the weakness in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s petrol subsidy policy.
Abubakar Maigandi, PMAN National President, had urged the Federal Government to broker an agreement with domestic refiners, including the Dangote Refinery, to bring down petrol prices amid a fresh surge in pump prices. He stressed that such intervention should not be mistaken for a return to blanket fuel subsidy.
Reacting in a statement by Phrank Shaibu, his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Atiku said IPMAN had “come late” but reached the right conclusion that government could not stand aside while high petrol prices worsen Nigerians’ economic hardship.
“IPMAN has come late to this conversation, but it has come to the right conclusion,” Atiku said.
