FLUSHING MEADOWS — New York is a loud city. The Big Apple, and particularly the US Open, is an assault on the senses – and it turns out that is not restricted to the experience of spectators.
Players are having to battle the sounds and smells of New York, even in the hallowed preserves of the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Naomi Osaka caused a stir with her second outfit of the tournament, walking out in her take on a white blazer and with a train, mesh underneath but more formal over the top. Underneath, her tennis dress was a silver, shiny number, designed to glint in the sun’s rays. She looked radiant, and also like something from a retro science-fiction film.
There was significant murmuring in the stands when she emerged, predominantly excited, although doubtless with some dissenting voices if the replies to this post on X are anything to go by.
