In Kyiv, traffic will be halted for 60 seconds at 9:00 a.m. during the nationwide minute of silence.
This was announced by the Kyiv City State Administration; the Kyiv City Council supported the decision, according to Ukrinform.
“Every day at 9:00 a.m., during the nationwide minute of silence, traffic in Kyiv will be halted for 60 seconds. Where technically possible, traffic lights will be switched to ‘all red,’” the statement reads.
The draft resolution was developed pursuant to a protocol directive from Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko in response to a request from Kyiv City Council members who are currently serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
It is noted that transportation experts analyzed various scenarios for halting traffic during the minute of silence, conducted the necessary simulations, and determined a mechanism that will allow this to be done in a controlled and safe manner, without unduly disrupting transportation operations. This decision is intended to demonstrate that even in a large city, remembrance need not be a mere formality but rather a collective act, and that Kyiv is capable of pausing at a crucial moment, behaving with dignity, and setting an example.
