A former University of California, Berkeley softball player is suing the school and former head softball coach Chelsea Spencer, alleging that the coach pressured her into a sexual relationship and reduced her playing opportunities when she tried to distance herself.The player, who is referred to as Jane Doe in the lawsuit, filed the complaint Aug. 24 in Alameda County (Calif.) Superior Court. The complaint names Spencer, the University of California’s Board of Regents, unidentified people including “administrators, athletic directors, supervisors, employees, agents” and other individuals who “participated in, facilitated, enabled, concealed, ratified, or are otherwise responsible for the intentional misconduct.”The filing, obtained by The Athletic, accuses Spencer of sexual assault and battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress. It also accuses the university of negligence on multiple fronts, alleging that Cal’s own investigation found Spencer violated campus policy on conflicts of interest in consensual relationships. The former player is seeking a jury trial and unspecified damages.A Cal spokesperson declined to comment on the lawsuit and the investigation.Michael Carney, a managing partner at Slater Slater Schulman, the law firm representing the plaintiff, told The Athletic: “Our client came to UC Berkeley to pursue her lifelong dream of playing softball at the highest level, in an environment where she could focus on her sport and her education. Instead, she was placed in an impossible position by a coach who held power over her future and by a university that failed to enforce its own policies.”
