Gloria Steinem, the writer, journalist and pioneering feminist who became one of the most influential voices in America’s women’s liberation movement, has died at the age of 92.
Steinem died peacefully at her home in New York City on Wednesday, surrounded by people who loved her, according to a statement posted by her foundation on Thursday. No cause of death was given.
“Gloria’s near-century on earth were years well-lived, and she continued working for equality until the very end,” her foundation said.

For more than six decades, Steinem used journalism and activism to challenge laws, institutions and social attitudes that limited women’s rights. She campaigned for reproductive rights, equal pay and workplace equality, while also supporting same-sex marriage and opposing the death penalty and female genital mutilation.
