Two weeks after an alliance of Congress rebel councillors and the LDF came to power in Pala municipality, the civic body is bracing for another political test with the election of the vice-chairperson scheduled for September 16.While the election of Congress rebel Maya Rahul as chairperson passed off smoothly, the vice-chairperson election is expected to be more contentious, with differences within the ruling combine over the post remaining unresolved. Adding to the uncertainty, Congress rebels Biju Mathews and Tony Thaiparambil have staked claims to the post.In the 26-member council, the LDF-Congress rebel alliance enjoys a clear majority, with 12 LDF councillors and four Congress rebels. The Kerala Congress (M)-led LDF had earlier made it clear that it would not seek any position in the civic body, leaving the vice-chairperson post to the Congress rebels. However, the rebels have yet to reach a consensus on their candidate.Mr. Mathews argues that he deserves the post as he has not been given any position in the council, while other rebels, including Mr. Thaiparambil and Rejitha Prakash, already head various standing committees. Mr. Thaiparambil, however, has not made it clear whether he will press his claim. He said political stability of the council should be given paramount importance and that the chairperson needs strong support from the vice-chairperson.In the emerging political scenario, the stance of chairperson Ms. Rahul will be crucial. The LDF has 12 members, and her support would ensure a majority in the election. However, she too has refrained from disclosing her preference.“The ruling combine will convene a meeting to discuss the matter and take a decision before the vice-chairperson election. If the dispute persists, Ms. Prakash, another Congress rebel, may emerge as a consensus candidate, particularly as the Kerala Congress (M) is keen to avoid direct participation in the municipal administration,” a source said.Meanwhile, a Kerala Congress (M) source said the possibility of the party fielding a candidate for the post was unlikely at present, though the situation could change depending on future developments.
