Hyderabad parliamentarian Asaduddin Owaisi on Thursday termed the October 17 deadline for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls grossly inadequate and demanded that sufficient time be given to ensure that no genuine voter is excluded from the final rolls.Mr Owaisi said all genuine electors must be included in the electoral rolls and argued that people who have been issued notices require at least two months to respond to them. The present deadline, he said, did not provide adequate time for voters to complete the process. Turning to allegations of financial irregularities in the management of the Ram Mandir, Mr Owaisi questioned the government over why action had not been taken against those accused of wrongdoing.“Who appointed the previous persons? The entire matter was raised in the Parliament. Despite this, crores of rupees were siphoned off,” he said, referring to the allegations of embezzlement.Mr Owaisi said the anger among devotees stemmed from the belief that their faith and devotion had been mocked. While the government was free to appoint whoever it chose, he said those accused of theft must be held accountable.“An FIR has been registered and a report is there. Why is that report not being made public?” he asked.Accusing the ruling establishment of exploiting religious sentiment for political gain, Mr. Owaisi said, “You have made fun of the janta’s aastha. You gathered votes in the name of devotion, you gathered votes and power in its name,” he said.He alleged that those involved had “looted” in the name of a project associated with the religious sentiments of millions, and demanded that the findings of the inquiry be made public and responsibility fixed.
