Amen Thompson has agreed to a five-year, $208 million rookie-scale contract extension with the Houston Rockets, a team source confirmed to The Athletic on Thursday.The source spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal, which includes a 10 percent trade kicker, was not yet official. ESPN first reported the extension, which will begin with the 2027-28 season.The Rockets selected Thompson with the No. 4 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft after he and his twin brother, Detroit Pistons star Ausar Thompson, played one year at Overtime Elite Academy. After a mostly quiet rookie season, Amen Thompson broke out in his second season and emerged as one of the league’s most interesting two-way talents. During his sophomore campaign, Thompson averaged 14.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.4 steals on a Rockets team that shocked on its way to a 52-win regular season. Thompson was an All-Defensive First Team selection and finished fifth in Defensive Player of the Year voting.Thompson’s skill set made him somewhat of a rare weapon on both ends of the floor, but his explosive athleticism was undeniable. He’s already regarded as one of the most gifted athletes in the league with his combination of size (6-foot-7, 200 pounds), speed and leaping ability. His lack of an outside shooting touch made him a different type of prospect from most of his peers at the guard position, but he found other ways to impact the game by scoring in transition and in the paint during half-court sets.Thompson’s immediate chemistry with fellow Rockets star Şengün made both of them much more effective on the offensive end and provided Houston with a two-man game that’s set to be a core part of the Rockets’ offense for the foreseeable future.
