The water level in the Ganga on Thursday (September 3, 2026) rose to the dangerous level, threatening flood in several districts of Bihar such as Saran, Munger, Jehanabad, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Lakhisarai, Bhojpur, Buxar and Patna.Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and JD(U) president and former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar reviewed the rising level in the Ganga from different points in Patna and urged people to remain alert and gave instructions to officials for people’s safety.JD(U) working president and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Jha said that after a decade (2016), the water level in the Ganga had reached a dangerous level in Bihar.The Patna district administration was keeping a strict vigil in the Punpun area where an embankment ring got breached.After the flash flood in Nepal, which took the lives of over thousand people, the water level in the rivers of Bihar such as the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi and their tributaries have been rising and decreasing intermittently for the last 10 days. People living in the low-lying areas of the river in West and East Champaran, Saran, Patna, Gopalganj, Vaishali, Patna, Bhojpur, Buxar, and Bhagalpur have been facing flood threat.Mr. Choudhary on Thursday (September 3, 2026) inspected the rising Ganga water level at Patna’s Gandhi Ghat and in view of the possible flood situation, asked the officials to ensure the safety of people in the low-lying areas. The Water Resources department (WRD) officials said that due to incessant rain in the State and due to flash flood in Nepal, the water level in the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi and their tributaries had been rising. In Patna’s Gandhi Ghat, the water level of the Ganga was likely to “breach the highest flood mark” on Thursday night, they added.The WRD officials, along with State Disaster Management department officials, urged people living on the riverbanks to remain “alert and avoid unnecessary movement near ghats and embankments.”. Bhojpur, Patna, Vaishali, West and East Champaran, Saran, Gopalganj, Bhojpur, Buxar, Jehanabad, Lakhisarai and Begusarai districts have been seeing a rise in the water level of rivers such as the Ganga, Gandak and Kosi. At Hatidah in Mokama of Patna district, the level in the Ganga rose to a dangerous level on Thursday. The local people living in low lying riverine areas had been advised not to bathe in the river, the WRD officials said.At some places in Gopalganj, Bhagalpur and even Patna diara (riverine), residents were seen moving away from their village houses to safer places carrying essential goods. “Relief camps have ben set up at different places for such people”, a senior Disaster Management Department official said.
