Namakkal Corporation Commissioner S. Selva Balaji has warned commercial establishments and the public that penalties will be imposed on those who fail to segregate waste into four categories and hand it over to the waste collection personnel.As per the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, which came into effect across India from April 2026, it is the responsibility of waste generators, including commercial establishments and the public, to segregate waste into four categories: biodegradable, non-biodegradable, sanitary waste, and special/hazardous household waste.The Namakkal Corporation requested the public and commercial establishments to segregate the waste generated at their premises every day into the prescribed categories and extend their support to the Corporation. The Corporation has announced that, from September 2026, unsegregated mixed waste will not be collected under any circumstances.Mr. Balaji said that door-to-door collection of waste from residential areas and commercial establishments within the Corporation limits will be implemented intensively from September. Residents are required to hand over the segregated waste in the prescribed colour-coded bins or bags to the Corporation’s waste collection personnel on the designated collection days.The wet/biodegradable waste, such as kitchen waste, cooked and uncooked food, vegetables, fruits, meat, flowers, tea/coffee powder and eggshells must be kept in green bins. Dry/non-biodegradable waste including paper, plastic, metal, glass, cardboard boxes, clothes, and packaging materials should be placed in blue bins. Sanitary waste, such as used diapers, sanitary napkins, tampons, condoms, and urine-soaked absorbent materials must be kept in red bins. Special care waste/household hazardous waste including paint containers, pesticide containers, CFL bulbs, tube lights, expired medicines, batteries, needles/syringes and electronic waste should be placed in black bins.The Commissioner stated that those who violate these rules will be fined, and further action, including the disconnection of power and drinking water connections, will also be taken in accordance with the applicable regulations. Dumping waste in public places or drains is strictly prohibited. Commercial establishments can hand over the segregated non-biodegradable waste generated at their premises at the Kosavampatti compost yard by contacting 76399-91954, the Commissioner added.
