The Tamil Nadu government will establish an Olympic City in Chennai and a Motor Sports City in the State as part of efforts to build world-class sporting infrastructure, nurture international-level athletes and promote sports tourism.Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced the initiatives in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Thursday under Rule No. 110.The proposed Tamil Nadu Olympic City will be developed in Chennai by the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority as an integrated sports complex meeting Olympic standards. The facility will feature world-class sporting venues, advanced equipment, a high-performance training centre, sports science and sports medicine centres, besides modern accommodation facilities for athletes and coaches.The Chief Minister said the Olympic City would serve as a centre for hosting national and international sporting competitions while helping identify and train talented athletes capable of winning medals at the Olympic Games and other global events.The government also announced plans to establish a Motor Sports City, leveraging Tamil Nadu’s strong automobile manufacturing ecosystem and its growing prominence in motorsport.Tamil Nadu is already home to major automobile and motorsport manufacturing facilities, particularly in Chennai and Coimbatore.The State has established racing venues, including the Madras International Circuit at Irungattukottai near Chennai and the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore, which host national-level Formula racing events.The proposed Motor Sports City will include an international-standard racetrack, modern training facilities and supporting infrastructure capable of hosting global competitions, including Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3 and Formula 4 events, he said.Published on September 3, 2026
