PHOENIX — More than two hours before Wednesday’s game, the final day of this 10-day road trip for the Philadelphia Phillies, neither of the two TVs in the visitors’ clubhouse at Chase Field showed the Atlanta Braves game already underway across the country. There was tennis on one screen and football on the other.It’s not that the Phillies aren’t monitoring the team they are chasing and will meet in seven of their next 10 games. They are. But so much of this feels like house money; the Phillies could not have anticipated for much of this season that they’d even be within striking distance of Atlanta come September. They meet for this weekend’s four-game series separated by four games.The Phillies are not yet guaranteed a place in the postseason, but they hold a six-game lead on a National League wild-card spot with 22 games to play. They have erased a large deficit to the Chicago Cubs for the top wild-card spot, which guarantees a three-game series at home. NL East division title or not, the Phillies have a decent idea that playoff games await.So it becomes easier to look the other way after Wednesday’s 1-0 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks in two hours, three minutes, which capped a 6-3 trip. Everyone wanted to go home. The Phillies have that luxury because they have won 15 of their last 18 games. And, even when they lose now, it feels as if they were in it.“When you’re riding the hot hand, you just got to keep it going,” Jesús Luzardo said. “Keep coming to the yard every day. At this point, it’s not an expectation to win. But we know it’s going to be a fight every day, and we have a chance.”Improvements across the roster have fueled that feeling, but nothing has made this feel more sustainable than the rise of the entire starting rotation. After Zack Wheeler surrendered eight earned runs in the opener of this road trip, the next eight starts by the Phillies yielded eight runs in 50 2/3 innings. That’s a 1.42 ERA from the rotation.
