The Netherlands has moved about $11 billion worth of gold from the United States and Canada to London as rising geopolitical tensions push the Dutch central bank to strengthen the country’s ability to access its reserves during a crisis.
De Nederlandsche Bank, the Netherlands’ central bank, said it relocated 86 tonnes of gold between March and August, moving part of its reserves from New York and Ottawa to London, where the metal can be traded more easily.

The move does not reduce the country’s overall gold holdings. The Netherlands had 612.4 tonnes of gold worth €72.2 billion at the end of 2025, with the central bank describing the relocation as a measure to improve resilience and preparedness.
“With this relocation, we have improved the tradability of our gold reserves,” DNB Governor Olaf Sleijpen said.
