I didn’t hit many last year, which makes me qualified again.Let’s dive in.Most passing yardsSo, it turns out I made one correct stat-stuffer prediction in 2025, forecasting that Drew Mestemaker, then at North Texas, would lead all passers during conference championship week. He delivered with 294 yards in the Mean Green’s 34-21 loss to Tulane in the American Conference title game.Mestemaker is now at Oklahoma State, along with his former head coach (Eric Morris) and the Mean Green’s leading rusher (Caleb Hawkins) and receiver (Wyatt Young).The Cowboys’ Week 1 opponent, Tulsa, returns two legitimate ball hawks in Elijah Green and Zach Williams but lost defenders responsible for 21.5 of last season’s 23 sacks. That is a problematic way to welcome the country’s reigning passing champion.Mestemaker throws for 350 yards, and the Cowboys cover the 13.5-point spread by the narrowest possible margin, winning 41-27 to avenge a seven-point loss to Tulsa last season.Most rushing yardsCam Edwards rushed for 1,240 yards and 15 touchdowns at UConn last season. He’s now at Michigan State playing for Pat Fitzgerald, who coached his last game at Northwestern in 2022. The Spartans, who ranked 110th in rushing in 2025, rebuilt their offensive line with five veterans who combined for 53 starts last season.Edwards introduces himself to the Big Ten with 175 yards and two touchdowns in a 30-17 win over Toledo on Friday night in East Lansing. The Rockets allowed only 96.3 rushing yards per game last year, but that defense is gone. New coach Mike Jacobs had zero defensive starters return.
