El Niño is expected to persist until at least February, with extreme weather conditions forecast to last into 2027.

The UN weather agency says there is a near 100 per cent chance El Niño will intensify, driven by exceptionally warm Pacific Ocean temperatures.

The phenomenon has already triggered a severe food crisis across Central America's Dry Corridor, with its peak expected at the end of this year.

Toxic haze from El Niño-fuelled wildfires in Indonesia has caused widespread disruption across South-East Asia, affecting Malaysia and the Philippines.
