Michael Reaves / Getty ImagesSept. 2, 2026 Updated Sept. 3, 2026CHICAGO — Chicago Cubs right-handed reliever Jacob Webb left Wednesday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers in the top of the ninth inning after being struck in the right forearm by a 102.5 mph line drive off the bat of Christian Yelich.Webb tried to pick up the ball and throw out Yelich, but his throw went past first baseman Michael Busch, which was eventually scored as an error. Cubs manager Craig Counsell and trainer Nick Frangella came out to see him, and Webb left the game immediately. Counsell said Webb’s X-rays were negative.“He’s got a little bit of pain, and he’s got a pretty big bruise — it’s going to be a big bruise — so he’s a little sore,” Counsell said. He added it hit Webb “in the meaty part of the forearm.”
Webb, who has a 3.15 ERA in 61 appearances, has been one of the Cubs’ most reliable relievers in a season filled with pitching turmoil. Over six outings in August, he had four saves and two wins, but on the recent trip to Seattle and Arizona, he blew two saves on walk-offs.He entered in the ninth inning of Wednesday’s 9-5 loss, getting one out before hitting Luis Lara and giving up that painful comebacker to Yelich.The Cubs fell to 78-62 and are now nine back of the first-place Brewers in the National League Central.
