The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday (September 2, 2026)continued to attack the BJP government over the alleged bicycle scam and distributed pamphlets outside girls’ schools in every ward of Delhi, demanding the resignation of Education Minister Ashish Sood, according to the party. The party also “celebrated” Mr. Sood’s birthday outside Swami Nagar Government Girls School with the students, with an AAP worker wearing a mask of Ashish Sood cutting the cake, while pamphlets were distributed to students and their parents during school dispersal, explaining how poor-quality bicycles were allegedly purchased at inflated prices. The AAP has been alleging that the Delhi government bought 1.3 lakh bicycles under a government scheme at “exaggerated” rates. The party also alleged that tender conditions were tailored for specific companies and demanded the resignation of Education Minister Ashish Sood. Presenting the annual budget in March, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had announced ₹90 crore for the distribution of free bicycles to 1.3 lakh ninth-grade girls in government schools to curb school dropouts. The government kicked off the scheme on July 31 by distributing cycles to 3,000 girl students. AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged that they were distributing pamphlets among children and their parents to tell them that the same bicycle available in the market for ₹4,000 has been purchased by the Delhi government for nearly ₹7,000. “There is ₹3,000 loot on every bicycle. Today is also Education Minister Ashish Sood’s birthday. We have been levelling allegations of corruption against his department for so long, but he has neither ordered an inquiry nor spoken to us. He did not invite us to his birthday either, so today we cut his cake among the children here and wished him a happy birthday,” he said. Published - September 03, 2026 05:00 am IST
