Australians bought an average of 55 new garments in 2024 and much of this clothing made the short journey from retailer to owner to rubbish bin. More than 880 million of these garments, totalling about 220,000 tonnes, ended up in Australian landfill.
The Seamless Circular Clothing Textiles Fund, winner of the Government, education, health and not-for-profit category in the 2026 Financial Review Sustainability Leaders, looked into how this pattern of consumption and waste can be changed.
