Finland leads the happiest countries in the world in 2026 for a ninth straight year, and the countries just behind it show what stable societies get right
Finland has topped the World Happiness Report for nine years straight, and the reason has almost nothing to do with excitement. It has to do with trust — in neighbors, in the police, in the idea that if something goes wrong, someone will show up to help. That distinction sits at the center of the 2026 edition of the report. It was released in March by the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford, working alongside Gallup and the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network. Now in its 14th year, the report ranks 147 countries using Gallup World Poll interviews collected from 2023 through 2025. Respondents are asked to picture a ladder running from zero to 10 and say which rung best matches their current life. Six factors help researchers explain the gaps between countries: income, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity and low corruption. They do not set the ranking directly. The number that counts is how people rate their own lives.
