Race debutant Matthew Brennan claimed his third victory in the Vuelta a España on stage 11 in Lorca on Wednesday, once again profiting from a perfect Visma-Lease a Bike leadout.The Briton, who won stages two and five, was comfortably the fastest finisher, springing out of Wout van Aert’s slipstream with 125m to go and finishing ahead of stage eight victor Bryan Coquard and Jordi Meeus.Van Aert continued his sprint to finish fifth, thus adding to his lead in the green jersey classification.There were no changes in the general classification, with Enric Mas maintaining his one minute 18 seconds lead in the red leader’s jersey over Primož Roglič.But there were scares for the GC cohort midway through the stage, when just after the initial break were caught, crosswinds split the peloton in two. After 10km, however, the two groups came back together. Ethan Hayter and Larry Warbasse then turned escapees, but the pair weren’t permitted much of an advantage and were duly reeled back in.Several teams took to the head of the race in the closing kilometres in preparation for the bunch sprint — including Groupama-FDJ United for stage 10’s surprise winner Basten Tronchon — but it was Visma who were best placed heading into a 180-degree bend with 400m remaining.
