Nigeria is creating new millionaires again, but it is struggling to turn rising private wealth into a durable economic advantage as South Africa and a growing group of African destinations build stronger ecosystems for attracting, retaining and compounding capital.

The contrast is stark.

Nigeria added 900 dollar millionaires in the year to June 2026, taking its high-net-worth population to 8,100, according to New World Wealth. It was the first annual increase since 2022, helped by a stronger naira, rising financial-asset values and new business activity.

South Africa, however, operates on another scale.

Its high-net-worth population stands at 48,200 , more than five times Nigeria’s, including 131 centi-millionaires and 10 billionaires. South Africa accounts for 38 percent of Africa’s millionaires and 36 percent of its billionaires, according to the Africa Wealth Report 2026.
