U.S. Open player Thea Frodin said Tuesday that she hadn’t received any reaction or congratulations from Serena Williams in the five years since the release of “King Richard,” in which Frodin served as the younger Williams’ body double in the tennis sequences.Following her straight-set loss to No. 2 Elena Rybakina in her Open debut, the 17-year-old Frodin was asked by a reporter if she had received any “reaction” or congratulations from Williams for her rise in the sport.“Not yet, but hopefully soon,” she replied. “There was obviously a lot of other things happening in that movie, and so I’m sure she was caught up with that, but yeah, no.”It was already understood that Frodin never met Serena Williams in person during filming or afterward. She reportedly worked on the “King Richard” set a few times a week for six months to imitate Williams’ strokes as a youth in a role played by actor Demi Singleton.But the notion that they apparently had not interacted seemed rather surprising, especially since Frodin was now playing in the tournament that gave Williams the first of her 23 Grand Slam singles titles and where the G.O.A.T. is playing again. She was scheduled to team with Venus Williams in doubles after losing in mixed doubles.Frodin was by no means throwing shade at the mom of two and tennis star ― just matter-of-factly answering a question.She did say, however, that she got a social media repost from Will Smith, who won an Oscar for playing Williams’ father, Richard. He shocked the world by slapping Chris Rock at the ceremony.
