Through his first two seasons with the program, Duke football head coach Manny Diaz could not have been asked to accomplish much more than he has. Diaz has led the Blue Devils to two nine-win seasons in his first two years in Durham, including bringing the program its first ACC Championship since 1989 last season. After transitioning from Mike Elko, who left Duke to take over at Texas A&M in 2023, Diaz has kept the momentum rolling. The Blue Devils have invested more in football of late, but the reality is that Duke is not a premier football program on a national scale, at least not one most major recruits or portal prospects desire to end up at. Diaz has overachieved in both of his seasons in Durham, and if he does it a third time, he could become a hotter name in big-time head coaching searches. ESPN's Adam Rittenberg recently released several head coaching names who could be in the mix for the next big head coaching vacancy in college football, surveying "several industry sources" in the process. Diaz was included. But he also should have higher-profile opportunities, especially with a diverse background as an assistant. 'The rise of Manny Diaz,' an industry source said. 'Fired by Miami and now he's a hot name at Duke. Look, you can win at Duke, you can win at a lot of places.'" Rittenberg said. Last season, his name was floated around with both the Penn State and Michigan vacancies. For now, Diaz is gearing up to lead a Blue Devils squad with a ton of uncertainty into another successful campaign. Duke will kick off its regular season this Saturday against Tulane at Wallace Wade Stadium, and with so many new faces in the program in 2026, Diaz will once again have to work his magic to maximize the roster he has at his disposal.
