I had somewhat higher hopes for this scouting notebook, as I’d planned all week to head down to see the Low-A Delmarva Shorebirds, who have the Orioles’ first two picks from the most recent draft on their roster, face off against the Fredericksburg Nationals’ top prospect, right-hander Landon Harmon. Harmon did pitch, but Eric Booth Jr. and Ty Head both had the night off for Delmarva, presumably to avoid having them face some of the best stuff in the Carolina League, while Fredericksburg’s Gavin Fien hasn’t played in a week.Harmon was 95-98 mph early in his outing with big life on the four-seamer, while throwing both a slider in the upper 80s and sweeper around 78-81. He held that stuff for about three innings or so, but in his last inning of work he was down more toward 91-94. Harmon’s big issue on Friday was a complete lack of command; not only did he walk four in four innings, but he also threw a ton of non-competitive pitches, which is hard to accept from a guy who has at least two pitches that should miss bats in the zone.He has an extremely fast arm, and gets a lot of that arm speed from his lower half, which in theory should make him better able to hold up while throwing this hard. (I say “in theory,” because in practice, even guys with “clean” mechanics get hurt, so this is all about reducing the risk, even marginally.) Harmon missed about two months this season with an oblique strain, so he’s barely pitched this year, with 38 total innings between Low A and one rehab appearance in Rookie ball. That probably explains why he hit a wall around 50 pitches, but I hope that next year, the Nats let him work deeper into games and perhaps push him to pace himself more, because this is high-end starter stuff. He might be the Nats’ best pitching prospect.Delmarva’s lineup did have two prospects of some interest, even if neither is on the level of Booth or Head. Infielder Jimmy Anderson, Baltimore’s fifth-round pick this year out of Heartland Community College in Illinois, walked a couple of times and had a bloop single. He can manipulate the bat, but in this game he got blown up a bit by velocity.
