Only 28% of South Africans have a valid will, while 65% have none. As families support loved ones across generations, experts warn that planning ahead can prevent confusion, delays and conflict
Only 28% of South Africans have a valid will, leaving many families without clear plans for what happens to their assets and dependants when they die.
This is according to the latest Sanlam Legacy survey, which found that 65% of respondents have no will at all. Even among those who have one, 39% have not told the person most likely to wind up their estate where the document is kept or what it contains.
This comes as 34% of respondents support ageing parents, grandparents or extended family, while 47% have helped wind up a loved one’s estate.
CEO of Sanlam Trust, Advocate Sankie Morata, said having a will is about protecting the people you love, regardless of how much you own.
