The 2026 edition of Nigeria’s national tertiary education ranking will be conducted before the end of the year, former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Emeritus Prof Peter Okebukola, told our correspondent on Tuesday.
Okebukola, who chairs the Nigerian Universities Ranking Advisory Committee, disclosed this following the Federal Government’s decision to expand the national ranking exercise beyond universities to include polytechnics and colleges of education.
He also allayed concerns over whether the expanded committee would have sufficient manpower to execute the broader mandate, pointing out that major global ranking systems operate with relatively small teams.
“Did you know that all the global ranking systems have less than 10 people implementing their activities?” Okebukola said.
The professor spoke against the backdrop of the Federal Government’s announcement that participation in the national tertiary education ranking exercise would now be compulsory for all tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
