The Lagos State Police Command on Tuesday denied tear-gassing pensioners during their protest in Alausa, describing reports of the alleged incident as false and misleading.
This comes as the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights demanded an investigation into the incident and the payment of the retirees’ outstanding entitlements.
The police command debunked reports of images circulating on social media about the use of tear gas on pensioners, stating that a specific photograph allegedly depicting what happened at the protest ground was generated via the use of artificial intelligence.
According to a report by The PUNCH, tear gas reportedly disrupted a pensioners’ protest in Alausa, Lagos, on Monday, prompting human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) to demand the arrest and prosecution of the officers involved.
The pensioners had gathered at the Lagos State Government Secretariat and the House of Assembly complex to press for outstanding pension adjustments and wage awards before the police intervention dispersed the protest.
