The film about Jewish athletes persecuted by the Nazis will now be shown elsewhere.
A Bratislava cinema has cancelled the screenings of a Holocaust documentary after most of its staff objected to the Israeli embassy’s involvement in the event, Denník N reported.
Watermarks, a 2004 film by Israeli director Yaron Zilberman, was due to be screened at Edison Filmhub on Wednesday as part of Shalom Chaverim, a festival of Jewish culture.
The documentary tells the story of female swimmers from Hakoah Vienna, a Jewish sports club whose members were forced to flee Austria under the Nazis. The women reunite at their former swimming pool 65 years later.
The objection was not to the film itself, but to the Israeli embassy being one of the partners behind the screening.
