The Delhi Cabinet on Tuesday approved second amendment to Delhi Solar Energy Policy, 2023, under which rooftop solar systems of up to 3 kW will be installed for free for domestic consumers with an average consumption of up to 400 units per month. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said consumers using up to 200 units of electricity would not only continue to receive the subsidy after installing rooftop solar systems but would also earn an energy-saving incentive for the electricity they save. The government has set a target of installing solar systems on 2.3 lakh rooftops and adding 500 MW of rooftop solar capacity by March 2027. Ms. Gupta said work to install solar systems on government buildings is already under way. In addition to the ₹78,000 subsidy provided by the Central government, the Delhi government will provide a Capital subsidy of ₹78,000. It will also provide an additional top-up to cover the difference between the subsidies and the tendered cost of the solar plant, the Chief Minister’s Office stated. Sood targets AAP Power Minister Ashish Sood said the government has “shattered the AAP’s (Aam Aadmi Party) massive lie that free electricity cannot be sustained”. “We have not only kept free electricity alive, but have secured and institutionalised it for the next 25 years,” Mr. Sood said.
