Amid soaring onion prices, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday said the Union government will provide 1,000 metric tonnes of onions to Delhi, which will be sold at ₹35 per kg through fair price shops. Onion prices have risen in recent weeks due to crop damage caused by rain. They are currently selling for around ₹50-60 per kg in Delhi’s retail markets. “The government wants to ensure that an essential food item such as onions does not go beyond the reach of ordinary people,” she said.
Apart from fair price shops, onions will be sold through one van in each of Delhi’s 13 districts, according to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).
“The aim is to ensure that affordable onions reach areas where people may find it difficult to access fair price shops. This will improve availability across the Capital and allow more residents to benefit,” an official statement said.
