Bastien Tronchon took an unexpected victory on stage 10 of the Vuelta a España for Groupama-FDJ United. The 24-year-old Frenchman won an uphill sprint into Elche de la Sierra, denying the green jersey of Wout van Aert and other fast finishers. Magnus Cort of Uno-X Mobility was second and Thibau Nys of Lidl-Trek was third. It is Tronchon’s maiden win at WorldTour level and his French team’s first stage victory in a Grand Tour in two years. The race leader Enric Mas finished among the front group and retains his lead at the top of the general classification by one minute and 18 seconds over Primož Roglič.Seven riders formed a breakaway at the start of the undulating 185km stage that took the peloton through Castilla-La Mancha. On the day’s final penultimate climb, with the peloton bearing down on the leaders, birthday boy Eddie Dunbar of Pinarello-Q36.5 set off in pursuit of the remaining four.Near the top of the climb, a new dangerous quartet that included Nys and two-time stage winner Matthew Brennan briefly went clear, but they were brought back, setting up the bunch sprint.Yevgeniy Fedorov, the national champion of Kazakhstan, tried to prevent the inevitable with a late attack alongside Xabier Azparren of Pinarello, but Tronchon came around the pair in the final metres to claim the biggest victory of his career.
