CLEMSON, S.C. — Dabo Swinney went to a Cleveland Browns practice this summer, not knowing that one of those players — tight end Dae’Quan Wright — might end up suiting up for LSU on Saturday against Swinney and his Clemson team.“I’ll probably get turned in for tampering,” Swinney joked Tuesday.Wright is practicing with LSU this week, and he could be cleared to play if a Thursday hearing in Louisiana goes his way. So could Zxavian Harris, a defensive tackle who is also part of a suit seeking another year of eligibility despite having been with a pro team this summer.Swinney, asked if it frustrates him, called it an “embarrassing” moment for college football.“Rarely am I at a loss for words … it’s kind of embarrassing, honestly,” Swinney said. “It’s just embarrassing that that’s where we are. I don’t blame the kids, trying to take advantage of the system. But it’s embarrassing for college football. …“It’s a joke. We’ve got zero rules. And when you enforce rules, somebody just goes and finds a judge to say you can’t enforce those rules. Never did I feel like I’d be playing in an era like that, but that’s where we are right now.”Three storylines to watch: Indiana, Arch and KiffinStewart MandelSwinney didn’t call out LSU coach Lane Kiffin, who has publicly pushed for the players to be eligible, based on the NCAA changing its rule to allow players a fifth year without grandfathering in players from the 2022 class, instead saying: “No pun intended, but we’re going to stay in our lane.”“I’ve lost zero sleep over that,” Swinney said. “I don’t judge anybody. They can do what they want to do.”But he did make light of how he spent the summer watching college games to scout LSU’s transfers: Arizona State for quarterback Sam Leavitt, plus Ole Miss, Wisconsin and others.“We spent this last week or so studying the Browns, the Cowboys, the Saints and the Bucs,” Swinney said.Clemson enters this Saturday’s game at No. 11 LSU as about a 10-point underdog. It’s unranked in the preseason AP poll and coming off a disappointing 7-6 season.Swinney did announce a starting quarterback: senior Christopher Vizzina, who was widely expected to assume the starting role but got a push from freshman Tait Reynolds, dating back to spring practice. Reynolds was not highly recruited — a three-star recruit who was the 34th-ranked quarterback in the 2026 class, per the 247Sports composite — and missed most of his senior season in Arizona with a hamstring injury. But his dual-threat ability made the competition last longer.“He’s not a mile ahead. But he’s ahead,” Swinney said of Vizzina, who has 105 pass attempts in three seasons. “And practice matters. There was a time where I really thought Tait had a chance to take the job, and then he had a couple disastrous days, and just looked like a freshman. But to CV’s credit, CV has just been incredibly steady. He’s put his head down and gone to work. He got ahead to this point.”
