Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Keenan Allen will play in Week 1, general manager Chris Ballard said Tuesday, two days after Allen was arrested and charged with two misdemeanors for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Allen, 34, was taken to the Marion County Jail early Sunday morning and was released around 4 p.m. ET. He has a court date set for Sept. 16, three days after the Colts’ season opener against the Baltimore Ravens.The Colts had to cut down their roster to 53 by Sunday night, but they did not release Allen following his arrest. Given his otherwise clean off-field record and his importance to the offense, that wasn’t a surprise.“Good people make mistakes,” Ballard said of Allen on Tuesday in his annual preseason news conference. “He’s a tremendous human being. Give him some grace, and he’ll work through the process of the legal system.”Ballard confirmed that the Colts do offer rideshare services to their players. When asked if Allen will be punished by the team, Ballard said, “We’ll keep that internal.”“We want to say, ‘Holy s—!’ We want to freaking kill people when they (mess up),” Ballard said. “One mistake in a 14-year career, yes, but give people grace. One of the problems we have right now is we don’t give anybody grace. I think over time, and he understands this, he will prove to y’all and this city who he is. And I think he’ll do that in a short amount of time.”Keenan Allen warming up for practice two days after being arrested for OVWIJames BoydIn terms of facing punishment from the league, the NFL’s policy and program on substances of abuse stipulates a three-game suspension without pay for a first-time offense “if a player is convicted of or admits to a violation of the law … relating to the use of alcohol.” However, given the NFL’s track record of taking its time before it makes a decision on such matters, Allen may not be punished (or suspended) for a while, meaning it’s possible he could play the entire season without having to miss time.Allen was charged with DWI/DUI/OWI endangering a person and DWI/DUI/OWI with a blood alcohol level of .08 or more, according to an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department report. The charges Allen faces are Class A and C misdemeanors, respectively. A Class A misdemeanor carries a penalty of up to one year in jail and a maximum fine of $5,000, per Indiana law. A Class C misdemeanor carries a penalty of up to 60 days in jail and a maximum fine of $500.Allen was arrested Sunday morning after Indianapolis police conducted a traffic investigation involving Allen in the 100 block of South Meridian Street, according to the police report. Officers investigated after observing a vehicle parked in a no-parking zone, according to an IMPD statement.“Officers spoke to the driver, later identified as 34-year-old Keenan Allen, and noticed signs of intoxication,” IMPD said in its statement.Allen joined the Colts on a one-year deal worth up to $8.32 million earlier this month. Allen, who made his preseason debut Sunday, is one of just 18 players in NFL history with 1,000 receptions. He has recorded more catches (1,055), receiving yards (12,051) and touchdowns (70) than the rest of the Colts’ receivers combined.
