Colorado coach Deion Sanders had a lot of good things to say about Georgia Tech on Monday. He praised the Yellow Jackets coach Brent Key and running back Justice Haynes, then laughed when Voice of the Buffs Mark Johnson brought up the size of Colorado’s receiver room during the Colorado Football Coaches Show. The laugh led to one of Sanders’ clearest football reads of the week.“That is funny, man,” Sanders said. “I tell you this. I don’t think their corners press, I think they play off. So it’s gonna be fun. It’s gonna be fun.”Deion Sanders takes in the second day of Cleveland Browns training camp, July 30, 2026, in Berea, Ohio. | USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect— JaKi 🇺🇸 (@JaKiTruth) August 31, 2026Sanders knows the position too well, in fact, better than most coaches discussing it. He played 14 NFL seasons at cornerback and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame at the position. When he talks about how a corner may line up, then there is more behind it than a quick game-week response."Smaller receivers was a problem. Because you know, getting your hands on they're shifty. Bigger guys, I got more to put my hands on. From shoulders to waist line," said Sanders. Why Deion Sanders thinks Colorado's size couldn't matter lessColorado has heard questions about its size throughout the offseason, and Sanders has pushed back on them before. The receiver room gives people an easy place to look because several of Colorado’s fastest options are smaller players.Danny Scudero led the FBS with 1,297 receiving yards at San Jose State last season. | Raymond Carlin III-Imagn ImagesColorado wide receiver Danny Scudero is 5-9, 175, but he arrives with production that is hard to dismiss. He led the FBS with 1,297 receiving yards at San Jose State last season and earned first-team All-Mountain West honors.Coverage could help a player like Scudero because the corner gives him room at the snap instead of trying to jam him at the line. The matchup becomes more about getting open quickly, finding space, and making the defender close ground.Colorado is not small everywhere at receiver, either. Colorado wide receiver Joseph Williams is 6-2, 200, after catching 37 passes for 489 yards and four touchdowns last season. Florida State transfer Hykeem Williams gives the Buffaloes another 6-2, 220 option.Julian Lewis opens the season in his home state against a Georgia Tech defense with a new coordinator. | Julian Lewis/CU BuffsJason Semore gives Georgia Tech a different defenseSanders’ read comes with an important catch. Georgia Tech has a new defensive coordinator in Jason Semore, and his defenses have made a living on pressure and takeaways.Semore’s Southern Miss defense led the country with 23 interceptions in 2025 and finished third nationally with 29 takeaways. Georgia Tech brought him back to Atlanta after forcing only nine takeaways last year. The Yellow Jackets also changed the cornerback room. Their Week 1 depth chart lists returning corner Daiquan White and Alabama transfer Jaylen Mbakwe as starters, with South Florida transfer Jonas Duclona behind White. So Sanders may expect cushion, but Colorado cannot assume it will see the same picture every snap. Semore can change the look, ask his corners to drive on short throws or mix in the pressure that forces Colorado quarterback Julian Lewis to make a faster decision.Brennan Marion can test the space earlyColorado offensive coordinator Brennan Marion has built the Go-Go offense around movement, unusual formations, and quick decisions. If Georgia Tech’s corners line up off the way Sanders expects, Colorado can find out early how much space they are willing to give.Brennan Marion brings the Go-Go offense into its first regular-season game with Colorado. | Samantha Laurey / Argus Leader / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn ImagesFor Lewis, that could mean easier completions underneath instead of asking him to hold the ball and wait for longer routes to develop. The redshirt freshman is opening the season in the place he grew up, so any clean read helps.Nothing Sanders said gives away Colorado’s game plan. It does show what he is watching. The size question made him laugh, but his answer came back to leverage and space, not height. If Georgia Tech gives Colorado’s receivers room Thursday night, Scudero and company will have a chance to make that cushion matter. If the Yellow Jackets change the picture, Lewis and Marion will have to make adjustments very quickly. That is where Sanders’ small scouting note becomes something worth watching once the ball is snapped.Sign up to our free newsletter and follow us on Facebook for the latest news.Add us as a preferred source on GoogleFollow
