Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara on Tuesday (September 1) visited drought-hit areas of Mysuru district and interacted with farmers to assess the impact of deficient rainfall and crop loss.During his visit to Kanchugaran Koppalu village in K.R. Nagar taluk, Dr. Parameshwara sought details from farmers about crop losses caused by the rain deficit, its impact on agricultural activities and the difficulties they were facing.Officials informed him that crops, including ragi, maize and tobacco, had withered and perished at the germination stage due to the lack of rain, highlighting the severity of the drought. Several crops sown across the district have been affected by the rainfall deficit, they said.Dr. Parameshwara promised farmers facing hardships due to the drought that the government would extend the necessary assistance. A comprehensive report on crop losses would be prepared and submitted to the Centre, and the State would seek enhanced compensation under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF), he said.He said the State would also urge the Centre to relax the existing NDRF norms so that more taluks severely affected by drought could be brought under the relief mechanism.Dr. Parameshwara warned microfinance institutions against harassing farmers for loan recovery at a time when they were facing financial distress due to the drought.He said strict legal action would be taken against institutions violating the rules framed by the State government.K.R.
