Connor Hellebuyck has doubled down on his desire to be traded, leaving the Winnipeg Jets in desperate need of goaltending help.Stuart Skinner is a capable starting goalie and has won the seventh-most games in the NHL over the past three seasons. The problem is that Skinner won most of those games playing for an Edmonton Oilers team with a better roster than the Jets have now. The Oilers made back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals despite Skinner’s sub-.900 save percentage and then traded him to the Pittsburgh Penguins early last season.Winnipeg needs Skinner to be at his best and a goalie who can play the “1B” role in the 30-35 starts Skinner leaves behind. That’s beyond what rookies like Thomas Milic or Dom DiVincentiis are capable of thus far, particularly in a season where the Jets try to push back toward playoff contention. It’s not an ideal position for general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff to be in.That doesn’t mean he’s hooped. Ingram averaged 33 games per season from 2022-23 through 2024-25, posting superior numbers to Vejmelka in the first two of those three seasons, then gave Edmonton a viable .899 save percentage in 32 games last season after the whole league passed on claiming him via waivers.It’s possible teams are hesitant to bank on Ingram in a feature role, knowing he’s battled OCD and anxiety, twice entering the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program. But when he’s played, he’s given teams exactly the sort of 30-35 games of quality Winnipeg needs now.Cam Talbot, 39Talbot appears to be defying Father Time, averaging 45 starts per season over the past three years. He has been everything from Henrik Lundqvist’s backup through Edmonton’s Hellebuyckian 73-game starter in 2016-17 through a capable 1B goaltender in the twilight of his career. John Gibson took over as Detroit’s No. 1 goalie last season, but before that, a 37-year-old Talbot gave the Red Wings better results than Petr Mrázek or Alex Lyon.Talbot would be a stopgap, even in a best-case scenario. The worst-case scenario is that his career-worst .883 save percentage from 2025-26 is the beginning of the end of his 13-year NHL career. He was solid as a 1A/1B for six straight seasons before last season.James Reimer, 38Reimer shares an agent with Skinner, Hellebuyck, Eric Comrie and Laurent Brossoit. He grew up in Morweena, Man., and would know everything he needs to know about Winnipeg and the Jets to make an informed decision about signing. He’s not a compelling timeshare option, though — he’s averaged 18 starts in his last three seasons, posting an .898 save percentage in that time. He joined Toronto on a professional tryout agreement last September, but was released, ultimately signing with the Ottawa Senators in January.I’d portray a Reimer homecoming as an unlikely scenario, but the bet would be on the .900 save percentage he posted over the two seasons before 2025-26.Matt Murray, 32Murray has hit the highest heights of the five veteran UFA goalies, winning back-to-back Stanley Cups to start his NHL career. The rest of his resume reads like a mixed bag: Conn Smythe consideration followed by strong performances in three of his first four seasons, replacement by Tristan Jarry, and then a series of injury-affected disappointments with Ottawa, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Seattle Kraken.The 6-foot-5 goaltender missed the entire 2023-24 season after surgery on both hips. He was great in the AHL in 2024-25, but played just five games for Seattle in 2025-26 due to a lower-body injury that sidelined him for four months.Petr Mrázek, 34Mrázek struggled in Anaheim after joining the Ducks as part of the Gibson blockbuster, posting an .858 save percentage in 10 games. He has had good years, including a 2023-24 season for the Chicago Blackhawks in which he played 56 games and posted a .908 save percentage during Connor Bedard’s rookie season. He just hasn’t chained several seasons like that together — not since he played for the Carolina Hurricanes almost a decade ago.Trade returnsThe simplest play is to acquire a backup in the initial Hellebuyck trade, and most teams linked to the Jets — or which seem like sensible trade partners — have goalies to spare.
