All college quarterbacks face some degree of pressure. Some are under pressure to deliver a deep postseason run — or even a national championship. Some are essentially tasked with saving a head coach’s job. Others are trying to validate lofty recruiting rankings or lucrative NIL contracts, while others are trying to boost their draft stock.So as the college football season kicks off in full this week, let’s take a look at the quarterbacks with the most at stake this fall.Note: The QBs are listed in order of their ranking in our 2026 College Football Quarterback Tiers. All recruiting rankings are from the 247Sports Composite.Darian Mensah (Miami)QB Tiers rank: 4th (Tier 1)Mensah was the top quarterback on the market this offseason after leading Duke to the 2025 ACC championship, which followed a strong redshirt freshman season at Tulane in 2024.Mensah has won at a high level at two schools but has never played under the spotlight he’ll face at Miami. He is following in the footsteps of two really good transfer quarterbacks. Cam Ward won 10 games, was a Heisman Trophy finalist and became the No. 1 pick after transferring from Washington State in 2024. Last season, Carson Beck led the Hurricanes to the national championship game after transferring from Georgia.Mensah has a strong supporting cast, headlined by receivers Malachi Toney and Cooper Barkate (also a transfer from Duke) and running back Mark Fletcher Jr. If the offensive line comes together — there’s plenty of talent, but it’s inexperienced — Miami should have one of the top offenses in the nation.Mensah has a real chance to elevate himself — he’s No. 41 in The Athletic’s 2027 NFL Draft rankings — and will be expected to lead Miami back to the College Football Playoff.Arch Manning (Texas)QB Tiers rank: 7th (Tier 1)Both Manning, the preseason Heisman favorite, and the Longhorns, the preseason No. 1 team, fell short of expectations in 2025. That shouldn’t happen again.Texas was aggressive in the transfer portal and upgraded at the skill positions with the additions of receiver Cam Coleman (Auburn), the top overall transfer, and running backs Hollywood Smothers (NC State) and Raleek Brown (Arizona State).Manning is the No. 1 quarterback and No. 3 overall player in The Athletic’s 2027 NFL Draft rankings. We’ll see if he can play up to those projections this fall and lead Texas back to the CFP against a very difficult schedule.Is Arch Manning at #32 Disrespectful?Ralph D. Russo and Stewart MandelSam Leavitt (LSU)QB Tiers rank: 8th (Tier 1)There’s nothing low-stakes about LSU right now. The university spent heavily to hire Lane Kiffin, build his coaching staff, and put together a top-flight roster as the Tigers attempt to climb back to an elite level.Kiffin and his staff are placing a lot of faith in Leavitt, a two-year starter at Arizona State who led the Sun Devils to the 2024 CFP. He played very well during that late-season run, which included a 45-19 win over Iowa State in the Big 12 title game, but he’s never carried a team before. Running back Cam Skattebo was the heart and soul of that 2024 team, and last year, Leavitt was banged up and didn’t make the leap many expected.LSU will be one of the most-watched teams in the country because of Kiffin’s arrival and all of the off-the-field drama in recent months. And all eyes will be on his hand-picked quarterback.
