The Athletic has live coverage of Patriots vs Seahawks in the NFL Kickoff Game. The New England Patriots have spent the last few days tweaking their roster. They added backup running back Corey Kiner and backup offensive tackle Walter Rouse via late-round draft-pick trades. They set their initial 53-man roster late on Sunday. And on Monday, they nabbed two players off waivers, selecting tight end Cameron Latu and linebacker Darius Muasau for additional depth. That helps answer the most pertinent questions about the roster. But plenty of questions remain about the state of the Patriots with the opener in Seattle a little over a week away. Today, let’s look at the lingering questions still facing the franchise. What did we learn at the NFL special league meetings?Jonathan Jones and Johnny SweetHow can they generate a pass rush?Last season, following injuries to defensive linemen Harold Landry and Milton Williams, now-defensive coordinator Zak Kuhr ramped up his blitz percentage in an attempt to make up for their losses. In the first half of last season, the Patriots ranked 21st in blitz percentage. In the second half, they ranked fifth. The hope from coaches this offseason was that they wouldn’t have to play that way again — that they’d be able to create a more consistent pass rush with their front four. But that’s looking unlikely. Landry is on the PUP list, which means he’ll miss at least the first four games. Rookie second-round pick Gabe Jacas is behind schedule after missing summer practices. Offseason signing Dre’Mont Jones isn’t a pure pass rusher. Plenty is already on the shoulders of Elijah Ponder, who went undrafted last year. That leaves edge rusher, without question, as the team’s weakest position.Part of the hope here lies with Christian Barmore. Last season, Barmore ranked 11th in the league among defensive tackles in Pro Football Focus’ win rate and 29th among defensive linemen in pressure rate. Yet that led to just two sacks, which is probably an anomaly. If Barmore repeats (or improves on) that level of play, he should get more than a couple sacks, which would help the defense significantly.
