Four batters into Monday night’s series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers, the Chicago Cubs had their first home run, a two-run blast off the bat of Tyrone Taylor. By the end of the night, Chicago had nine in total as part of a 17-3 rout that cemented August 2026 as one for the record books for the North Siders.Led by Alex Bregman’s three long balls, the Cubs finished the calendar’s eighth month with a team-wide 62 home runs, the second most in MLB history behind the 2019 New York Yankees and their 74 homers, also in August. It is the most by an National League team, just one ahead of the 2023 Atlanta Braves (61 homers).The power-driven history doesn’t end there, and as MLB.com’s Sarah Langs chronicled, it gets more impressive the deeper you dive in.With nine homers in a single game, the Cubs joined the 2025 Yankees, who did it twice, in a tie for the second-most homers in a single game. The honor, 10 homers, belongs to the 1987 Toronto Blue Jays, who did so in a Sept. 14 contest against the Baltimore Orioles. Of course, those Blue Jays did not benefit from the presence of a position player pitching as these Cubs did, leaving six Orioles to cover 24 outs.
Seven of Chicago’s 17 runs, including three homers, came against first baseman Andrew Vaughn, who was tasked with covering two innings in a lopsided Milwaukee loss.With multiple three-home run games in a single month, Bregman became the first player since Adam Duvall (2020, Atlanta Braves) to accomplish the feat. He joins a list that is six deep and headlined by noteworthy power hitters, including Sammy Sosa (2001, Cubs) and Carlos Delgado (2001, Blue Jays).As a whole, Chicago became the third team to have three individual three-home run games in a single month, and the first since the 2022 Pittsburgh Pirates. Those efforts of prodigious power were headlined by Pete Crow-Armstrong (one) and Bregman (two).If all of this sounds a bit familiar, it’s because it is. This isn’t Chicago’s first time drilling eight or more home runs in a single game. In doing so for the second time this season, the Cubs became the fourth team in MLB history to have two or more eight-or-more-homer games in a season, joining those same 2025 Yankees, the Bomba Squad Minnesota Twins of 2019 and the 2005 Texas Rangers.Those nine homers are also the most in a game in franchise history for the Cubs.On a more individualized basis, Bregman and Crow-Armstrong, the front-runner for the NL’s MVP award, became the fourth set of teammates to tally 12 or more homers in a single month.
